Plant of the Month: Hamamelis (Chinese Witch Hazel)
One of the most rewarding of all the winter flowering shrubs, Hamamelis blooms on bare
branches from December to March. The ragged petalled flowers in shades of yellow and orange
provides much needed colour and fragrance in the garden, as well as lasting well when cut and
brought indoors. The foliage emerges once the flowers have faded, and provides one last burst
of colour in the autumn. Plant in sun or light shade in a slightly acidic soil, adding Westland
Ericaceous Compost. No pruning is necessary.

Tip of the month:

Prepare against the worst of the winter snow by tying up any upright growing conifers with twine or flexi-tie to prevent the weight
of the snow pulling apart those carefully tended shapes.

Gardening Tasks:
Prune fruit trees to ensure a good crop this year. Refer to The Fruit Expert book by Dr Hesseyan for easy to follow
illustrated instructions.
Invest in a pair of Swiss made Felco secateurs for trouble free pruning.
Don't forget to service your lawn mower and have all cutting tools sharpened.
Prune any dead or diseased wood from trees and shrubs.
This is often our coldest month - protect early flowering shrubs, such as rhododendrons, with fleece.
Pick up your copy of Mr Fothergills and Unwins seed catalogues, and make plans for the coming year.
Prepare First Early potatoes for chitting.
