Things to do in

January

  FEBRUARY   March

Plant of the Month:  Snowdrops,  Spring Flowering Bulbs
The Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) is one of the most popular of all our winter flowering plants
as it heralds the event of  life returning after a bleak winter. Purchase pot-grown plants as they flower,
or as bulbs in the late summer and autumn. Look out too for the many different variety of snowdrops
available; look inside the "drops" to spot the subtle variations. Snowdrops associate really well with
other early flowering bulbs such as Winter Aconites (Eranthis hyemalis), Hardy Cyclamen (Cyclamen
coum or hederifolia
) and crocus varieties. These can all be purchased at Floors Castle Garden Centre
as bulbs from the end of August, or as potted plants in late winter.

Tip of the month:
Prevent weeds from emerging with the use of weed killer Casaron G. Apply under hedges and shrubs before weeds start to
appear.

Gardening tasks:
Ö   Treat slippery paths and patios with Bayer Path and Patio cleaner.
Ö   Put up nest boxes, a good range is available from Chapelwood, including ones designed specifically for robins, great tits,
blue tits and sparrows.
Ö   Spray fruit trees with Growing Success Winter Wash to kill off any overwintering insects which have the potential to cause
problem in the year to come.
Ö   Disinfect greenhouse and potting areas with a solution of Jeyes Fluid.
Ö   The wild birds will appreciate extra food at this time of year - spoil them with a suet treat which has a high calorie content
to keep their energy levels up.
Ö   Re-firm soil that may have become loosened by frosts and winds around roots of recently planted trees and shrubs.
Ö   Divide clumps of snowdrops as they finish flowering, to ensure an even better display next year.
Ö   Book a place on the Journey of the Snowdrop talk and tour at Floors Castle.  Phone the Roxburghe Estate Office on
01573 223333 for details.
Ö   Prune old canes of autumn-fruiting raspberries.
