Things to do in

July

  AUGUST   September

Plant of the Month Thalictrum delaveyii  (Meadow Rue)
Not a really a rue which has unpleasant acrid foliage, this attractive herbaceous perennial comes
into it's own at this stage in the season. It has feathery delicate looking foliage, a little like that
of the maiden-head fern, above which it holds masses of tiny mauve bells. It is quite a tall plant, easily reaching above four feet in height, but will not require staking on all but the windiest sites.
It is very hardy, easily withstanding our cold Borders winters. Although it is very tall it is best
placed in the middle of the border to allow it's subtle charm to be appreciated to the full.

Tip of the Month:
This is a great time of year to take cuttings of plants to bulk up your own garden or to give away to friends. Don't be afraid to
have a go with lots of different plants in your garden, although the easiest ones include: Helianthemum, Arabis, Pelargoniums,
Violas, Penstemons, Philadelphus, and Solanums. Dip each cutting in rooting hormone before inserting into Westland John
Innes No 1 Compost. Cover each pot with a clear plastic bag, or invest in a heated propagator. Don't forget to ask permission
of the garden owner if you wish to take cuttings from plants not in your own garden!

Gardening Tasks:
Ö   Continue to irrigate when necessary.
Ö   Prune out flowered stems of climber and rambler roses.
Ö   Keep an eye out for mildew on asters, hollyhocks and any plants situated near fences and walls. Spray with Bayer
Fungus Fighter at the first signs.
Ö   Feed Dahlias and support tall plants with Tom Chambers Support Stakes.
Ö   Check all plant supports and ties, loosen if necessary and replace any broken or missing ones.
Ö   Cut back raspberry canes that bore fruit this year to just above ground level.
Ö   Sow pots of herbs to ensure a supply into the winter.
Ö   Think about installing outdoor lighting to allow you to make the best of the shorter summer evenings.
