Things to do in

March

  APRIL   May

Plant of the month Forsythia
Look out for named varieties such as "Beatrix Ferrand", and "Weekend". The sunshine yellow
of Forsythia flowers appear before the fresh green foliage, and for many people represents the
first real sign of Spring. Underplant with blue Lungwort (Pulmonaria) for a really eye-catching
display. Forsythias are happy in sun or partial shade and are not fussy  in their soil
requirements. Prune out flowered shoots after flowering to encourage new growth.

Tip of the month:
Towards the end of the month make a start positioning plant support stakes around taller perennials such as Michaelmas
Daisies, Delphiniums and Lupins. By addressing the problem early in the year you allow the plants to develop a more natural
growth pattern as the season progresses. Look out for the Tom Chambers adaptable range of support systems.

Gardening tasks:
Dead head flowering bulbs promptly to allow the plants energy to be diverted back to the bulb rather than on seed
production, but leave the foliage to die down naturally.
Cut back stems of Dogwood (Cornus} to almost ground level to ensure a good supply of bright stems next winter and feed
with Vitax Q4.
Prune out flowering stems of winter flowering shrubs such as Winter Jasmine (Jasmine nudiflorum).
Continue the planting of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. The garden centre has a huge choice at this time of year.
Mix compost and Vitax Bonemeal in with the soil to create the perfect planting medium.
Sow half-hardy annuals under glass in preparation for stunning summer displays.
Cut down any previous years growth left on any herbaceous plants.
Feed all Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias with Bayer Ericaceous Plant Food and Tonic.
Sow Johnson's grass seed on worn or bare patches of lawn.
Prune Buddleias and other shrubs that flower on the current seasons growth to within three buds from the base.
Re-install water pumps into the pond or water feature, and change the U.V. bulb.
Feed all water lilies with aquatic plant food tablets.
Sow runner beans, French Beans, Cucumbers, Courgettes, Tomatoes and Celery under glass.
Sow Beetroot, Carrots and Basics outdoors.
